The paradox of heutagogy and artificial intelligence

Abstract

The summary study presented here is considered the intersection between the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and heutagogy, understood as self-determined learning. This combination can become the paradox of autonomy versus dependence. This analysis is justified since the emergence and exponential use of AI in educational environments raises the need to explore how its use transforms the learning process. It is interesting to understand the implications of the use of AI as a heutagogical device. For this purpose, a qualitative methodology was used, analyzing previous studies, current applications, and future perspectives on the use of AI systems in education. AI can facilitate access to resources and foster student autonomy; however, its use entails risks that can result in erroneous knowledge and dependence on the supporting device, a device that, paradoxically, can be emancipatory. The conclusions indicate that the combination of heutagogy and AI: heutagogAI promises innovative, personalized, and emancipatory educational experiences; However, it is necessary to consider the design of systems that promote critical, reflective, and emancipatory learning and to emphasize the importance of maintaining a critical focus on the user of AI in education, ensuring that students develop skills to question and analyze the information received, which is fundamental for a truly emancipatory education.
